A colourful transformation along the Cronulla coastline.
I was commissioned to design and hand paint this public art mural on the Cronulla Esplanade in Sydney as part of a graffiti remediation project. The existing Sydney Water utility box had been heavily vandalised, creating an opportunity to completely refresh the space with a new piece of artwork inspired by its coastal surroundings.
Being positioned right beside the ocean, I wanted the mural to feel connected to Cronulla and the movement of the coastline. The design uses layers of bright greens and limes with flowing white linework inspired by water, natural contours and topographic forms.
The finished mural completely transformed the utility box, turning a functional piece of infrastructure into a colourful landmark along one of Cronulla's popular coastal walking routes. The artwork was designed not only to bring colour and personality to the public space, but also to help discourage future graffiti and create something the local community could enjoy.
Projects like this are one of my favourite examples of how murals and public art can transform everyday infrastructure. Even a small utility box can become an opportunity to create something playful, site specific and connected to the surrounding environment.
From a heavily tagged utility box to a bright piece of public art by the ocean, this was a very satisfying before and after.
