This one was made to be painted on!
Commissioned by Willoughby City Council, this community mural transformed the playground tunnel at Bales Park into a colourful, interactive piece of public art designed to be finished by the children who use the park.
I created the base mural using flowing green shapes inspired by nature, leaves and the surrounding park environment. Rather than completing every part of the design myself, areas were intentionally left open so local children could add their own little piece to the mural.
During a live community painting day, the tunnel became one big collaborative canvas. Children were invited to pick up a paintbrush and add whatever they imagined, from rainbows and flowers to handprints, characters, names and colourful little symbols.
I loved watching the artwork change throughout the day as more and more layers were added. By the end, it wasn't just a mural I'd created for the community, it was something we'd created with the community.
The finished tunnel is colourful, imperfect and completely unique to the children and families who helped bring it to life, giving them their own little piece of Bales Park to come back to.
